Playful Midcentury

These homeowners had preserved the original character of their midcentury home, thoughtfully restoring rooms over the years.  The office, guest bathroom and primary bedroom were the remaining spaces to update.  The owners are artistic, music lovers and Wilco is a favorite band.  I used this as my jumping-off point for the design, focusing on the song, California Stars.

In the office space, we designed wood, flat panel cabinets and a built-in desk that highlights the amazing views of the California hillside.  Pops of persimmon feel playful, along with the curves of Eames molded chairs.  In the bathroom, we incorporated the iconic Banana Leaf Wallpaper from CW Stockwell, used in the Beverly Hills Hotel.  We wanted to make the guest bath feel like a true getaway, and this wallpaper does the trick. Green tile from Fireclay continues the feeling of being immersed in banana leaves.  Lastly, the bedroom pulls from the song's lyrics, "I'd like to rest my heavy head tonight On a bed of California stars."  Saturated blue paint feels like you're immersed in the night's sky.  While vibrant, garden window treatments(Citrus Garden by Schumacher) make the windows the artwork-which draws your eye to the outdoors, whether the shades are open or closed.
